I posted this on a few other forums im a part of, but i want to hear some oppinions here to:
Tell me how much bullshit THIS is:
nikita.arheim.no/Dateline_Street_Racing.wmv
I think the media is purposfully interviewing the riciest faggots in order to get the most breath-taking story. Im sure theyve been informed MANY times about how real racers act and present themselves on roads, but they probably didnt care... That wasnt exciting enough to make a dateline story out of.
Also: 47 seconds into the vid is a MR2 Turbo.
This is the response i wrote to Dateline@NBC.com:
Hello, my name is Chris Schnell, I’m from Columbus Ohio. I just finished watching your presentation on Street Racing entitled "Hot Wheels". I have to say, i am absolutely... Just shocked at this entire story. So much so that I felt I should get off my lazy but and actually take time and effort to send you guys an email to clear some things up for you.
I organize events here in Columbus, "Street Racing" events (we prefer to call them Tuner events, the events aren’t about the racing). The meets are usually 2-300 cars large every Friday and Saturday night. All we do, the majority of the night long, is sit in a parking lot full of cars and talk cars, women, life, whatever comes to mind. Like a giant party in a parking lot-a social gathering of tuners. On occasion, a race will be set up. If one is, we try as best we can to keep it hush-hush, because if it gets out, every single car in the parking lot (no joke) will follow us to wherever we plan on holding the race, making it painfully obvious what’s about to happen to all and any passerby's, including the police. Its not worth it, especially when our main venue is an abandoned freeway at 3am, or out in the country where we are surrounded by nothing but corn fields.
The man you interviewed for your story is what we in the actual tuner scene call a "Ricer" with a "Ricer" mentality. Ricers are people who modify their cars in such a manner that makes them look and perform like junk, and generally drive like 12 year olds behind the wheel. Needless to say, the entire tuning community intensely looks down on these type of people and are generally cursed by their presence.... This is how the media is allowed to see us, because these type of people are the most noticeable. Endangering other people's lives, your own life, and your car, which is supposed to be your "baby" is defiantly NOT "cool" in our community.
Let me point out a few things about your story, and what the man told you that are totally incorrect:
1) Inexpensive compact cars are NOT called Tuners. Tuners are those who modify the cars and "tune" them to run most efficient. These cars are actually called "Sport Compacts".
2)It is NOT cheap to modify a Sport Compact car. I drive an MR2 Turbo, and my motor resides in the rear of my car. An aftermarket exhaust system for my car is a metal pipe, roughly 3-4 feet in length. That will run me about 800 dollars. A new turbo kit? From 1,800 to 4,000 dollars.
3) This man is 27 years old, and lives with his mother. Why on earth you chose to interview HIM of ALL people about street racing is beyond my wildest imagination. Interview someone who works for their money, works for their car. Someone who modifies their car, then drives it to work and back every day. Pays bills. Etc. That mans mom is insane. She claims her son will "die what he loves doing best"... Yeah, he will die, probably taking other innocent people's lives with him.
4) He exclaims that he can make "300-400 horsepower with 2,000 dollars. Easy.". This is a complete and utter lie. He drives a Honda civic hatchback. Even with a complete motor swap, AND 2000 dollars, it is a relatively difficult task to make 400 horsepower out of a 4 cylinder, and near impossible with 2,000 dollars.
5) The movie "The Fast and the Furious" is another thing looked down upon in the real world of racing. This movie does nothing but portray a group of car enthusiasts, then modifies it by 100 fold to fit Hollywood’s standards and to make some money off of a fake storyline; again, making all of us look bad in the process.
6) "Getting Sideways" is NOT an 'official' racing term. Its called Drifting, and has been around in Japan for 10 years or more. Real racers don’t do it on public roads, or if they do, its late at night with nobody around... And we make sure before we even begin to purposefully lose control of our vehicle that we've worked so hard to get just right.
7) The Mercury police car you featured is not fast. 140mph is what the average sport compact car tops out at. The unmodified sport compact car. Modified, Toyota Supras can top out at 180mph +
8) Another type of racing that doesn’t exist is the racing he called "Canyon Racing". This type of racing is another type of racing that has been around in Japan for 15+ years, and is called "Touge"... Japanese for "mountain road".
9) This is the most important point of them all. We as tuners would RATHER race on tracks! Imagine it: the perfect road, with no other traffic, no pedestrians, no potholes... Just all beautiful, grippy, winding road. On the other end, there are drag strips.. You get all the benefits! A track repaved almost yearly, ultra sticky pavement featuring your very own gigantic boards that display your exact quarter mile time and MPH for all to see. What do you think we prefer?
I would love it if you guys did a follow-up report on this, explaining the 2 dimensions of street racing: The ricer dimension (or wanna-be), and the real one, and how much the real racers are stressing to keep our name relatively clean. These "Ricers" are an uncontrollable force that make up a small part of our scene, and its doing more damage day by day.
