dont know if this is right spot for thread but ohwell does anyone know about the wiring harness needed to install a sony radio in a cavalier. i know how to put one in the car but i went to get the harness so i could do it and the guy at circuit city said it was $90 and if i didnt use that it would mess up the cpu (thats after i said i would just wire it up myself, i doubt a radio could screw up the entire cpu) $90 sounds really high to me but i dont know im not an audio person and i dont know about prices on this stuff so if anyone can help that would be great

a radio install from like best-buy that includes the harness plug, adapter plate, and stuff like that should be like 20bucks

Yeah, any stereo shop should be able to sell you that for under $20, that is a total ripoff. The thing about the ECU is crap too, you can install it without the harness if you know what you're doing, i've done dozens of them myself using wiring diagrams, the harness just simplifies the process. The harness just makes is easier for you to install, because most radios will take 30 minutes or so to wire up depending on how tight the working conditions. With the harness, you can pre-wire the radio to plug right into your stock harness, so then all you have to do is plug it in and mount it in your dash. My first install was intimidating, but once you do it, it's really simple.

If you have ever done an install on an Grand Am, Alero, Cavalier, or Sunfire with a Monsoon sound system in it you cannot put in an aftermarket stereo system. If you take your out and replace it you will lose a lot of functions in the car. The stupid monsoon system is tied into the ECU and kinda controls a few functions. It was GM's way of screwing people. Trust me on this one..Already did it.

thanks for the info i called the dealer where she got the car and the guy i talked to said that $90 was a little high but it could mess up a few things if done wrong he said he didnt know it was tied it to the cpu on his car and it messed his car up so i'll take his word on it and you just backed up what he said so i know he wasnt blowing smoke up my ass. so ill take it somewhere and have it done it'll be my chrismas present to my sister then i wont have to worry about screwing up her car someone else can

Yea, anytime. I just hate to see people get screwed because of the small things like that.

It just depends on the car. I actually had a Monsoon system in my 01 VW Jetta, the dealership gave me the same song and dance about the computer and all that BS. I put in an aftermarket head unit with a little extra work using a factory wiring harness converter...kept all of my mids and highs intact, no modifications at all. That car also had a 12 disc changer and 2 JL 15's pushed by an Alpine 1000watt amp...it was sickeningly loud, I miss that car, it went all the way to eleven!!
Most of the time they're just trying to scare people into paying $300 to have it installed and it's no real big deal. My 3000GT has a stock Bose system that i have connected to a Pioneer Premier Head unit, Plus a JL Amp and 2 JL 12's.... For your first install, just do your homework and know what you need to do so you can make it all work correctly. Go talk to a professional stereo installer, the right one will tell you everything you need to do and set you on your way. I have had nothing but good experiences with Stereo Limited in Canal Winchester...you can probably even call them and ask over the phone, they'll help you figure it out.

I hear ya, I don't care for them myself, older model Cavi's were horrible for the most part, with exception of the one ray has and the later year models...the last 2 years of the model run were very well built, because GM was ramping up the new Cobalt platform...so the late-model Cavi's got all the new Italian transmissions and EcoTEC motors..My roommate is a GM dealer and i drive all of his demo's on rampage shakedown runs to check them out...just never buy a demo car ok? I used to Hate GM and with what they've done in just the past 4 years to change the product line, it's really competitive now...too bad the UAW is choking the big 3 to death with overhead costs...off topic, sorry...

Yea, no offense to any other cavalier owner, but I freakin hate cavaliers. I do, however, like mine as I got it the way I wanted it, and I had to get the new style of cavy. It is an 04 with the eco and that was the selling point. Gotta have an engine that can take a beating.
Also, the Monsoon system was only put in the 03+ cavalier and sunfires. If it was older than that, then there should be no worries about installing the system.
Jack, yea you need a factory converter wireharness to keep certin bells and wistles on a car with monsoon systems. GM is retarded sometimes..

The gm radios are like the honda radios! you can loss somethings in the car if you dont piggy back the new radio! we had to do it with my old ladies 98 civic!other wise her keyless remote entry and factory alarm would not let us start the car! There are doing this to keep us from fucking with are cars!! let the pros handle it!

The Honda's are not too bad to wire, my Prelude hasn't given me any problems yet...heh...it's got the factory Alpine system in it, which is decent, but not adequate...it's getting replaced next spring if i get around to it, i don't really care...i'd just be happy to get the damn LED light in my radio to come on so i can see what station i'm on...how annoying...don't care enough to fix it.
I'm interested to see the new wiring on the Cobalt, the 04-05 Cavi's all had optional Pioneer Audio high end systems, as do the new Cobalt... It's something like a 400-500 Watt system with a factory 10 inch sub in the trunk. It's really one of the first respectable audio systems i've ever seen in a more base-priced car, not bad bang for the buck.
